Do not fear the child custody process

On Behalf of The Koblin Family Law Center | Nov 23, 2014 | Child Custody

While property division issues can be extremely complicated in high-asset divorces, the emotions they elicit sometimes cannot compare to the feelings that come out during child custody disputes. The idea of splitting time with your child with your ex can be very difficult. Before divorcees let their emotions get the best of them, there are a few things to consider.

First, it’s good to understand that the professionals have heard it all. Your ex may try to use your past against you in order to gain more custody, but professionals know what to look for when it comes to determining what is in the best interests of the children involved. While it may be embarrassing to have your personal indiscretions aired out in court, understand that attorneys, social workers and judges can read between the lines.

The whole idea behind child custody discussions is “the best interests of the child.” Keeping that in mind can help keep your fears at bay. While the drama may seem to overshadow this main goal, the professionals involved will work to keep things on track in order to create the best situation for your children. Professionals are looking to maintain stability in your child’s life.

Finally, make sure you have a strong support system while you go through divorce. This may include anyone from your family members to your attorney. It may also benefit you to find a support group that concentrates on divorce issues. Being able to talk to others who have been there and done that can be very reassuring.
